The Monasteries

There are a lot of monastic remains in Ireland.the monasteries were dissolved by Henry VIII and those that didn't fall then, mostly did not survive Cromwell's visit to Ireland. Some of the best ruins remain at onmacnoise(Co.Offaly) Kells(Co. Meath) , where the famous book of Kells came from (which is now housed in the library of rinity College ,Dublin),Monasterboice (Co.Louth), Glendalough (Co. Wicklow). Here the most obvious remains includea round tower, often reaching 100ft. Often in the area stand great stone celtic crosses, carved with scenes from the old and new testaments.
