Aran Knitting

The irish-knit sweater is distinguished
for its variety of raised pattern stiches
set side by side in vertical patterns

The intricate patterns in an irish aran sweater
are handed down by example and word of
mouth from Mother to daughter over the
generations.  Some symbols are obvious
to see, the cables represent fishermen's ropes,
diamonds are the mesh of their nets, others
come from older arts, the pre-christian swirls
of earlier times.  Dropped stitches are
supposed to identify a drowned son lost
at sea as in J. M. Synge's play "Raiders to the sea."

Other knitwear is popular in Ireland,
 and newer young designers create
wonderful items drawing on the natural
landscape, both in designs and colour.
